Hey boy wake I’m coming down
Hey boy wake I’m coming down from above
Hey boy wake I’m coming down
Come in close, hold my hand now boy
Lay your worry down
Lay it down and pick up on mine

2. Peaches (3:12)

Lucius arrives in Hypata and goes ’swimming’ in the wild and mysterious revelry of the city. He catches sight of Pamphile the witch changing into an owl in the distance. Craving magic and curious with excitement he follows her slave girl, Fotis home.

Lucius:

Now I’m here, I see the signs
Where o where’s my signal somewhere, who can take me higher
and its clear when you see the signs
Inside we know how to fly, we all know how to . . .
anyway I like it, I’m chomping through a peach, listen to that crazy cat faced girl on the boiling street,
what a wonderful world to motor around on.
wonder why all the signs on the side of the road want you to settle down,
anyway I like it, my home is out of reach, tonight when I sleep it could be in a room with someone I just met, it’s the heaviest of pockets,
so easy like the sugar, oh the south is melting to my skin, my mind is slipping under,
the peach is running over and over, over and over again

Now I’m here I see the signs
Where o where’s my signal somewhere who can take me higher
and its clear when you see the signs
Inside we know how to fly, we all know how to . . .
anyway I like it, my home is out of reach, tonight when I sleep it could be in a room with someone I just met,
it’s the heaviest of pockets, so easy like the sugar, oh the south is melting to my skin, my mind is slipping under,
the peach is running over and over, over and over again

Just as he is about to drift off to sleep, Lucius sees Pamphile change herself into an owl and fly out the window.

Fotis:

I wish a wind would blow this house to pieces and I wish a wind would drag this place away.
I want the lightning to crack and smash this house to cinders .
Oh I wish a wind to drag this place away,
This heart of mine wants to beat itself, out of its cage
Send me, send me someone, send me someone to fly this cage
Send me, send me someone, send me someone to fly this cage
I pray a flood will drag this house a distance and I pray a flood will drag this place away.
wake up, wake up, you best beware this evening cause my wish is with the one who swings the day
This heart of mine wants to beat itself, out of its cage
Send me, send me someone, send me someone to fly this cage

4. They Met (4:28)

The next morning, Lucius awakes, bewitched by what he has seen. Drawn to the magic he has witnessed and intrigued by Fotis, he finds himself knocking on the door, asking for room and board. She invites him in and feeds him. The two find something they are both searching for in each others arms, and the night ends with them sleeping in Fotis’ room.

Narrator:

They met, he saw an owl fly from her window
His hand grabbed the handle, her finger pressed the doorbell,
And that’s how his love set her free, her love would change him
She smiled, he told her that he was just needing a bed
She felt he had a secret that was dark and beautiful
And that’s how his love set her free, her love would change him
She lit a candle to light up the room, he watched her from the corner
He saw how she moved and she moved, and he went back to reading his own book, she reached above him to light up a lamp, her hips they brushed the table
A wine glass fell to the ground, and somewhere a record was spinning
They slept, their two hearts dreamt in different ways
One heart flew to the sun, one heart it stayed home
And that’s how his love set her free, her love would change him
And that’s how his love set her free, her love would change

Some lust is evil, some lust is silent, and some lust is dark
I keep the beautiful secret close to the lust in my heart

Once we spoke those words, I don’t need to remember what we said

Oh I feel different its starting in my heart, keep me close, keep me awake, keep me right here making this thing real, tonight, this wind sounds like a train
I come down to the city, want to change into a bird, make it easy to fly the city at night faster than the rabbit runs the field, tonight, this wind sounds like a train
It’s a fever working, on my insides, I didn’t know that change was hard like this
Roll me quick my love, for I see these, these looks of mine are nothing like I thought they’d be, nothing like I thought they’d be, oh I’m changing to a bird
It’s better than any lie, lies are little, its better than living my life in the middle, when I feel, tonight, this wind sounds like a train
It’s a fever working, on my insides, I didn’t know that change was hard like this
Roll me quick my love, for I see these, these looks of mine are nothing like I thought they’d be, nothing like I thought they’d be, oh I’m changing . . .

Fotis and Lucius

Who am I now? Who will it be? I can’t take my eyes off the road

Who am I now? Who will it be? Beating this heart, beating this heart

Fotis:

Moon is rising like a yellow sugarpiece
’Check your pockets girl’ she whispers sweetly to me,
My hand it shivers tonight and its holding what I need
How he moves my blood
Out here in the darkness, your heart is all you need
Out here we watch the fireflies dance to a sticky tune on the wind
His voice counts the skylights to a tune of sweet release
How he moves my blood with his sweetness is how I want to feel
Tonight loving him is like having honey on my teeth
How I’ve hungered for somebody sweet
Inside the radio plays with the music humming deeply
Inside this cold dark cell, I wake up from a sweet dream
What’s in my pocket, is my freedom in a seed, let them grow a
Rose by the seasons, that’s how I’ll make me free

Cruel how it seems, all my achings tease
What is done is done, and what is blood is blood
Scared in the night, winter haunts inside
What is gone is gone, and what is blood is blood
And what is blood is blood, and what is blood is blood
I see the river, frozen in the quiet
And I see the white field resting in the night
But under the whispers, a dream is holding tight
And under the winter, the water runs, the water runs
Strange how it seems, all my achings freeze
What is done is done when my time has come
When my time has come, when my time has come,
when my time has come

I come looking to change, oh they made me do it
So what’s today? Everybody seems to know me where I go
But I feel so far away from when we were pure and wonderful
That wonder faded, and I’m rolling, oh and I’m rolling
And I’m dancing in a show, now there’s no way out of it
How could I not know, I was born to play this part
Now I’m rolling, nothing scares me anymore
See how I just changed, the way we treat each other
See how they just changed what I forever have come to know
I feel so far away from when we were pure and wonderful
That wonder faded, and I’m rolling, oh and I’m rolling
And I’m dancing in a show, now there’s no way out of it
How could I not know, I was born to play this part
Now I’m rolling, nothing scares me, nothing scare’s me, scare’s me
Scare’s me

Light the way on to the ocean
Window in the night will you know to light the way back home
Light the way on to the ocean

Fotis:

Free, I am flying free soul wide open she taught me how to find my way on to the Ocean.
She, she taught me how to fly, help me fly to him
Teach me how to find my way back home

Moon, I know you, you can light the way back home

’The Eleven Books of Metamorphosis’, more commonly referred to as ’The Golden Ass’, was originally written by Apuleius in 2nd century Rome. It is claimed to be the world’s first novel. Apuleius based his story on Greek folktales and framed it as an overall satire of Homer’s Odyssey. Our version of The Golden Ass, although inspired by Apuleius’ work, is not quite an adaptation. We have more our less crafted our own story based on the original tale. Many of the primary concepts are preserved: Lucius still turns into a donkey. The rose is still a vehicle for transformation and the journey is condensed. There is a real love that exists between these two characters, becoming the seed for their metamorphosis together. This version reflects our story.

We created the concept, puppets, sets and music as we struggled, for what seemed like lifetimes - balancing the cup of survival in one hand and artistry in the other. Years in the making, we would probably have given up without sweet grace coming in the form of: a little help from our friends. Thank you Oda Fashion for pulling those wickedly inspiring all nighters in your SF studio, sewing miniture costumes and designing magnificent sets. Thank you Rachel and Jonathan Posner for providing the perfect New York "bat cave" (fully equipped with a delicious wood burning stove) for us nutty artists to create and animate at all hours of the day (and night). Thank you Howard and Esther Blumstein for the never ending encouragement and love you have shown us through our best and worst of times - hope is the most beautiful and precious gift. And most of all, thank you to our lovely fans for all your listening ears and searching eyes. We hope this next piece of work enriches your soul.

Love is all,
